السدود هي انشاءات هندسيه تقام فوق وادي او منخفض والهدف منها حجز المياه ، والسدود هي اقدم المنشأة المائية التي تساهم في تنمية موارد المياه ويتم الاستفادة منها في الري والزراعة والثروة الحيوانية وفي الصناعة. والسدود لها أهمية كبيرة في عمان فهي تحمي من الفيضانات و الامطار الغزيرة ، تتحمل السدود المياه و الطمي مما يؤدي الى ترسبها و يمنع تدفقها الى المصب مما يؤدي الى تأكل مجرى النهر بتزايد الرواسب المتراكمة في الخزانات والسدود ويختلف معدل الترسبات من سد الى اخر مما يؤدي الى اخذ مساحة في الخزان ويمنع حفظ المياه في السد ويؤدي الى انخفاض المياه. وتأثر الرواسب على كفائه السدود وبالتالي السد يحتاج الى صيانه والتخلص من هذه الرواسب صيانه السدود مكلفه وصيانتها متعبه
