تم أفتتاح جامعة القاهرة كجامعة أهلية عام 1908 ولم يكن خصص لها مقر فى ذلك الوقت فقد كانت المحاضرات تلقى فى أماكن متفرقة يعلن عنها فى الصحف اليومية كقاعة مجلس الشورى و القوانين ونادى المدارس العليا ودار الجريدة .

حتى أتخذت الجامعة لها مكانا فى سراى الخواجة نستور جانكليس والذى تشغله الجامعة الأمريكية الأن ونتيجة للمصاعب المالية التى تعرضت لها الجامعة خلال الحرب العالمية الأولى أنتقل مبناها إلى سراى محمد صدقى بميدان الأزهار بشارع الفلكى أقتصاداً للنفقات .

وقد كافحت الجامعة الوليدة لتقف على قدميها ولكى تتمكن من إعداد نواة لهيئة التدريس بها قامت بإرسال بعض طلابها المتميزين إلى جامعات أوربا للحصول على أجازة الدكتوراه والعودة لتدريس العلوم الحديثة بها ، وكان على رأس هؤلاء المبعوثين طه حسين ، منصور فهمى ، وأحمد سيف ، كما أنشأت الجامعة مكتبة ضمت نفائس الكتب التى أهديت لها من داخل البلاد وخارجها .

ونتيجة لما حققته الجامعة الأهلية من آمال عبرت عن تطلعات المصريين فقد فكرت الحكومة فى عام 1917 م فى إنشاء جامعة حكومية ، وألفت لجنة لذلك أشارت بضم المدارس العليا إلى الجامعة فضمت مدرستا الحقوق والطب إليها فى
12/ 2 / 1923 م ، وتم الاتفاق بين الحكومة وإدارة الجامعة الأهلية على الأندماج فى الجامعة الجديدة على أن تكون كلية الآداب نواة لها .

وفى 11 مارس 1925 صدر مرسوم بقانون بإنشاء الجامعة المصرية وكانت مكونة من أربع كليات هى : الآداب والعلوم والحقوق والطب التى ضمت إليها فى العام نفسه مدرسة الصيدلة .
