تعرف هذه الكنيسة بالرومانية بسبب جذورها التاريخية التي ترجع لمدينة روما، وبشكل عام فأن مصطلح "الرومانية الكاثوليكية" بدأ استخدامه في بريطانيا في القرن التاسع عشر وذلك للتمييز بين كنيسة روما والكنائس الأخرى التي تدعوا نفسها كاثوليكية أيضاً. وعبارة "الكنيسة الرومانية" تستعمل رسمياً للحديث عن أسقفية روما. أما لفظة "الكاثوليكية" فتعني باليونانية (الجامعة) ويعتبر إغناطيوس الأنطاكي أول آباء الكنيسة استعمالاً لهذا المصطلح. ويمكن تعريف الرومان الكاثوليك ببساطة على أنهم مسيحيين في شركة أيمانية مع البابا.
