المضاعفات المترتبة عن الالتهاب الرئوي والتي تستدعي الرقود في المستشفى لمعالجتها تظهر، عادة، لدى الفئات التالية:

المسنون فوق سن 65 عاما
الذين يعانون من امراض اخرى (وخاصة: مرض الانسداد الرئوي المزمن - COPD، السكري - Diabetes، الربو - Asthma، الفشل الكلوي المزمن - Renal failure، فشل القلب الاحتقاني - Congestive cardic failure ومرض مزمن في الكبد)
الذين تمت معالجتهم في المستشفى بسبب مرض اخر خلال الـ 12 شهر الاخيرة
الذين يدخل الى رئتيهم البلغم او عصائر المعدة (عملية الرشف - Aspiration)
الذين تحصل لديهم تغيرات عقلية
الذين خضعوا لعملية استئصال الطحال، او ان الطحال لديهم لا يعمل كما يجب
الذين يبالغون في شرب المشروبات الكحولية
الذين يعانون من حالة سوء التغذية
الذين يعانون من ضعف الجهاز المناعي
الذين يعيشون في حالة من الاكتظاظ مع اشخاص اخرين، كما في مؤسسات تعليمية او علاجية، مثلا
