وفقاً للتوراة، إن أصل اليهود ينحدر من ألجد إبراهيم عليه السلام، ومن بعده ابنه إسحق ومن بعده ابنه يعقوب وأولاده الإثني عشر، ومنهم جاء بنو إسرائيل الذين عاشوا في مصر القديمة ومن ثم انتقلوا إلى صحراء سيناء حيث أعطيت لهم التوراة من الله تعالي على يد موسى كليم الله عليه السلام.
