لم يكن من المستغرب آنذاك ظهور حيوانات برية مفترسة كالكلاب والقطط الضالة، ولم يكن مستغربآ إحتمال الهجوم من قبل بعض الذئاب البرية. كان يسمع من قبل عن بعض حالات من هجوم تلك الحيوانات البرية على بعض القوافل. تلك الحيوانات كانت تشم روائح الأكل التي يحملها مستخدمي ذاك الطريق الصحراوي، وتهاجم الدواب ومن معها للظفر بالأكل
