القانون آلة وترية قديمة يرجع تاريخها الي حوالي 5 ألاف عام و القانون بشكلة الحالي آلة عربيه يرجع عهدها الي العصر العباسي و قد أنتقلت الي أوروبا عن طريق الاندلس في حوالي القرن الثاني عشر الميلادي و يتكون القانون من صندوق صوتي يصنع عادة من خشب الجوز علي شكل شبه منحرف قائم الزاوية و يوجد في الصندوق عدة فتحات تسمي الشمسة لتقوية الرنين, و تحتوي القانون في الغالب علي 78 وترا لكل ثلاثة أوتار درجة صوتية واحدة و تشد الأوتار بشكل مواز لسطح الصندوق الصوتي و في الجهة اليسري من آلة القانون توجد مسطرة شد الأوتار أما في الجهة اليمني فيوجد الفرس و هو عبارة عن قضيب من الخشب يحمل الأوتار
