ظهرت نظرية اعتماد الفرد على وسائل الإعلام في سبعينيات القرن العشرين على يد الباحثين ساندرا بول روكتيتش وميلفين ديفلير استنادا على النظام الثلاثي المتبادل بين (وسائل الإعلام -المجتمع – الجمهور) والذي يعتمد فيه كل عنصر على الآخر مكونين هذه النظرية الاجتماعية، حيث لجأ الباحثان في بداية الأمر لتطبيق النظرية على المجتمعات الصناعية؛ وذلك لمعرفة العلاقة بين وسائل الإعلام والنظام الاجتماعي في تلك الدول ودور الأفراد في تحديد ماهية تلك العلاقة، حيث يعتمد الأفراد على وسائل الإعلام في العديد من المجالات وذلك كونها مصدرا موثوقا -في نظرهم- يستطيعون من خلاله تحقيق أهدافهم وتطلعاتهم ورغباتهم، وتتجلى أبرز تلك المجالات من خلال ثلاث عوامل مهمة،
