عاني العالم العربي من اعلى نسبة للبطالة بين الشباب في العالم، حيث تبلغ في الوقت الراهن أكثر من 25% من إجمالي الشباب.

تنذر مشكلة تزايد اعداد الشباب بتحديات اقتصادية وامنية خطيرة في المستقبل ان لم تتخذ الحكومات العربية خطوات جذرية لتوفير الفرص وتأهيل الشباب. وتشكل زيادة السكان أكبر التحديات التي تواجه الدول العربية في مواجهة البطالة خاصة الصغار والشباب منهم حيث ان ثلث سكان المنطقة تقريباً بين سن الخامسة عشر والتاسعة والعشرين. وهي المشكلة التي تضع عبءً وضغطً شديداً على سوق العمل والفرص المتاحة المحدودة. وتتفاقم حجم هذه المشكلة في الدول التي تمر بمشاكل اقتصادية كدول شمال افريقيا حيث يتواجد 24% من نسبة البطالة في المنطقة العربية.
وقد حذر مركز الابحاث "كارنيجي اندومنت من اجل السلام الدولي" من خطورة ظاهرة البطالة المتزايدة في المنطقة العربية معربه عن قلقها من الاثار السياسية الاقتصادية والاجتماعية التي على الاغلب ستؤثر سلباً على الامن في المنطقة.
