سيريلانكا.. ومعناها "الأرض اللامعة" في اللغة الهندية القديمة أو "سرنديب اسمها الأقدم" أو "سيلان الاسم الذي اشتهر به الشاي السيلاني"، وصفها الرحالة والمستكشف الإيطالي ماركو بولو عام 1254م بأنها "أفضل جزيرة من هذا الحجم في العالم" وقد كانت حاضرة في الثقافة العربية منذ القرن الثامن الهجري، وذكرها الرحالة المغربي ابن بطوطة ضمن رحلاته وشهدت تبادلاً وثيق الصلة بينها وبين العالم العربي من خلال تجارة الشاي والبهارات ورحلات الحج وأخيراً مع تشغيل مئات الآلاف من العمال السيريلانكيين في العديد من الأقطار العربية
