اسباب الالتهاب الرئوي، بوجه عام، هي الميكروبات (Microorganisms) التي تعرف باسم جرثومة (Bacterium) او فيروس (Virus). اسباب الالتهاب الرئوي تكون، عادة، نتيجة دخول جرثومة او فيروس الى الرئتين. الاشخاص الذين كانوا مصابين للتو بالنزلة الوافدة (الانفلونزا) او بنزلة البرد، يكونون اكثر عرضة للاصابة بالالتهاب الرئوي. وذلك لان الانفلونزا والبرد يصعبان على الرئتين مهمة مكافحة التلوثات. كما ان الامراض المزمنة هي من اهم اسباب الالتهاب الرئوي، مثل الربو (Asthma)، امراض القلب، السرطان، او مرض السكري تزيد من خطر الاصابة بالتهاب الرئتين.
