عام 1974م هزم “كلاي” الملاكم القوي “فورمان” ليستعيد بذلك عرش الملاكمة في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية والعالم بأسره حيث بلغ رصيده حوالي 56 انتصاراً منها 37 بالضربة القاضية، ولكن إصابته بمرض الشلل الرعاش من جراء لعبه الملاكمة حرمته من الاستمرار في ممارسة رياضته المفضلة حيث اعتزل الملاكمة عام 1981م إلا أنه لا يزال رمزاً رياضياً محبوباً حتى الآن
